Self-Portrait Sunday

Ok so I’ve been producing Self Portraits for, well as long as I can remember. I’m also notorious for “making” my student produce them. Yes “MAKING THEM”, mainly because most photographers dont like being on the other side of the camera.

I’ve been talking with some friends about why artists create Self Portraits and what they mean to us.

These are some of the reasons we came up with.

• To show others “How we see ourselves”
• To show others “How we wish to be seen”
• To show others “How we think others see us”
• To document “How we're changing”
• As a record of both the good and the bad things that happen to us
• As a record for myself and our loved ones
• As a way of dealing with our own mortality
• Because the model is always there
• We’re “self absorbed egomaniacs”
• We’re shy and afraid to ask people to model
